Born in 1987 as Takafumi Sakurai, Emufucka always had a good ear for music. He started playing the piano and violin at an early age and grabbed the mic as an MC during his adolescent years. His musical career as a beatmaker started in 2007, and the following year Emufucka was signed to Slye Records, a Hip Hop label that features the indie label arights Entertainment inc, providing his tracks with some of their artists.
Influenced by artists like J Dilla, Madlib, Flying Lotus, Rustie, Clark, Dorian Concept and James Blake, Emufucka writes his own genre, rather than trying to copy one. With thick drums, heavy bass, dusty noise and synthesized melodies, his space-sound restores a sensitive, melancholic yet soulful feel to beat music. Besides music, he’s inspired by English and American literature, sci-fi movies, video-games, animation series and the occult.
Emufucka’s musical reach has gone way beyond Japan, with his tracks being featured on the Santa Monica-based KCRW 89.9 FM in California, along with Cosmopolyphonic Radio and the Lithuanian webmix radio show Mondayjazz amongst others. His debut EP ‘Select’ was released through Brussels’ Citywurl Records and contains appearances by Count Bass D, Tableek (of Maspyke) and Mizube.
Emufucka made his premiere performance on Fremdtunes in March 2012 with his 4-track EP ‘Planar Rift‘ (ft remixes by St. Andrew and DZA) and introduced you to his Wonderland of spaced out, extraterrestrial, adventurous, de-tuned songs. Later that year his full-length EP ‘Retrace‘ (with remixes by Jazzo & Melodiesinfonies, Quarta 330, Coco Bryce and My dry wet mess) followed. Subsequently followed by the release of the 7-inch Cocofucka by Emufucka and Coco Bryce…
